In 2012, Sgt. Joe Mille lost his right leg to a roadside bomb during the final month of his deployment to South Kandahar, Afghanistan, where he was a rifleman and team leader for the Army. But he hasn't let the injury keep him down. After enduring a rigorous, 15-month stint of rehab, the Sitka, Alaska, native reenlisted for another six-year term.
Since his injury, Mille has already served as a competition shooter and instructor at the Fort Benning, Ga., Army base; served as a sniper team leader at Fort Drum, in New York; and deployed to Helmand Province, Afghanistan. He's now an infantry squad leader at Fort Drum, and pursuing a degree in counterterrorism studies.
"I plan to make the best out of my time in the Army and look forward to a long and fruitful career," said the 25-year-old, who is married with two children.
On Saturday, April 15, Toyota and the New York International Auto Show joined forces to celebrate and honor Mille with the donation of a specially customized 2017 Toyota RAV4 Hybrid. New York Gov. Andrew Cuomo presented Mille with his new keys during the auto show's opening ceremony at the Jacob K. Javits Convention Center in Manhattan.
"Throughout his multiple tours of duty, and even after serious injury, Sgt. Mille has inspired Toyota with his commitment, courage and dignity," said Kevin Curran, assistant general manager for Toyota's New York sales region. "We thank him for his sacrifices and service for others."
The Bussani Mobility Team of Mamaroneck, N.Y., outfitted Mille's new ride with a gas pedal that can be used with a left foot.
"The New York Auto Show salutes Sgt. Mille for his years of unwavering service and dedication," said New York auto show chairman John LaSorsa. "We're proud to partner with our friends at Toyota who have generously donated this vehicle to honor Sgt. Mille."
The 2017 RAV4 Hybrid continues to build upon the model's 21-year reputation for comfort, style and performance while offering a bevy of standard-issue safety technologies. The 2017 model is equipped with standard Toyota Safety Sense P (TSS-P), a new multi-feature advanced safety package that bundles Pre-Collision System with Pedestrian Detection function featuring forward collision warning and Automatic Emergency Braking; Lane Departure Alert with Steering Assist function; Automatic High Beams; and Full-Speed Range Dynamic Radar Cruise Control.
The most powerful and fuel-efficient RAV4 in the model's history, the 2017 RAV4 Hybrid achieves an EPA-estimated 34 mpg city/30 mpg highway/32 mpg combined and comes equipped with an Electronic On-Demand All-Wheel-Drive System with intelligence (AWD-i) as standard.

Students can now use a mobile app to pay for bus fare on the Big Blue Bus.
Token Transit is a mobile application that allows users to purchase bus fare on their devices. The app partnered with Big Blue Bus, which has several stops in the Westwood area and runs throughout Los Angeles.
The app’s users can purchase a bus fare and show their phone screen, which displays their ticket, to the driver upon entering the bus. Users can also buy single-use passes or monthly passes through the app.
Sam Daly, co-founder of Token Transit, said he created the app with three other developers to help make public transportation more accessible.
“We believe public transit is really important to every city, and we want to make it easier for folks to use it,” he said.
The app is currently in a trial period with the Big Blue Bus.
“The trial just started, but we’ve been doing trials in other cities, which have been going really well,” Daly said.
He said he thinks carrying exact change for bus fare may be a burden and unappealing for riders.
“We need to eliminate barriers to entry,” he said. “One barrier is paying for transit fare.”
Daly said public transit ridership had been growing for 25 years, but has recently declined. He added he believes Token Transit will help change that.
“Tech is one of the major controllable factors to get to reverse that trend,” he said. “Consumers are starting to demand paying for almost everything with their mobile devices.”
Suja Lowenthal, the transit planning and community engagement manager for the Big Blue Bus, said customers have been successfully downloading and using the app.
“More than three-fourths of our customers own a smartphone,” Lowenthal said. “Leveraging the smartphone as a way to make riding transit easier is the obvious thing to do.”
Typical boarding times with cash payments take about 23 seconds, but just two to three seconds with mobile payments. Lowenthal said the Big Blue Bus would like to see a decrease in cash users.
Lowenthal said the integration of technology may be particularly appealing to students.
“Our hope is that Token Transit will allow students to experience or consume our service in a manner that’s very familiar to them,” Lowenthal said.
Kristi Hoi, a graduate film directing/production student, said she likes the idea of the app.
“I don’t use the bus often, but I possibly would use it more if it was more convenient,” Hoi said.
Kim Nguyen, a graduate animation student, said she used the bus more often during her first year at UCLA, but stopped using it as regularly because it became inconvenient.
Nguyen said she thinks the app will make the bus more accessible.
“I never have coins on me,” she said. “I had the TAP card, but when I wanted to add money I had to go to the shop or the station, and I think you could make an online account but it was too much effort.”
Nguyen said she has been thinking about getting a car, but she does not want to worry about gas and other expenses.
“The bus is cheaper, so I would rather use it than get a car or use Uber or Lyft,” Nguyen said.
The Probation Department took almost 22,000 traffic violators in hand last year, with about one in every three of them taken on visits to morgues.
With the traffic safety campaign underway for the Songkran festival this week, Narat Sawetanant, director-general of the Probation Department, revealed on Monday the agency disciplined 21,944 traffic offenders last year.
Of these, 6,750 were sent to visit morgues and accident wards, 4,325 were assigned to help inpatients at hospitals, and 3,422 served as traffic volunteers who, for example, painted road signs and helped improve landscapes.
In addition, 4,615 people were put through a course on traffic rules, 1,510 on religion, and 791 on the dangers of alcoholic beverages.
Blood donations were required from 277 offending drivers while 243 others were tasked with cleaning hospitals and some with cleaning at the Poh Teck Tung rescue foundation.
The Probation Department was participating in the government’s road safety campaign, and was proposing longer hours of community service and other social contributions for traffic violators, Mr Narat said.
Men are far more dangerous drivers than women, according to statistics compiled by Dubai Police.
Numerical data from last year shows that the number of dangerous traffic accidents caused by men was 10 times higher than women and that there were far more fatalities as a result of accidents caused by men as well.
Brigadier Saif Muhair Al Mazroui, director of the Traffic Department in Dubai Police, said female drivers caused 126 dangerous traffic accidents, which led to the death of eight people last year.
That compares to 1,299 accidents caused by men that caused 186 deaths and caused severe injuries to 155 people
“Women caused four per cent of the total number of deaths [in accidents] last year. They injured 180 people including eight with serious injuries,” Brigadier Al Mazroui said.
While men are more dangerous drivers due to a tendency for speeding, recklessness or stunt driving, women generally fall foul of the law because they tend to get distracted while driving thus endangering themselves and others on the road around them, police said.
According to the new traffic law by the UAE Ministry of Interior, female drivers who are caught applying makeup or brushing their hair while driving will be fined Dh800 with four black points against their driving licence.
General Mohammad Saif Al Zafein, director of the UAE Federal Traffic Council, said that women putting on makeup while driving is no minor offence.
“This violation would be considered as serious one as driving in a dangerous manner.
“Applying makeup or combing hair while driving is more dangerous than using mobile phones,” he said.
